Introduction
Cistus labdanum holds a rare place in natural perfumery: it is simultaneously a botanical raw material, a historical artifact, and a pharmacological case study. The resin that Cistus ladanifer secretes on its leaves to protect itself from the Mediterranean sun is the same substance that ancient Egyptians burned in kyphi and which analytical chemistry today studies for its antioxidant and neuroprotective properties. Cistus is also the aromatic heart of Bananambar, where natural labdanum in harmony with cistus resin creates the "super-natural" amber vision of the fragrance.
This article reconstructs the botany, extractive history, chemistry, and traditional use of cistus in the Mediterranean, including Sardinia.
What is Cistus and what is Labdanum
The genus Cistus (Cistaceae family) encompasses evergreen shrubs typical of the Mediterranean scrubland, adapted to poor soils, prolonged drought, and intense sun exposure. The species that produces the most prized resin for perfumery is Cistus ladanifer (the Iberian "jara pringosa"), widespread in Spain, Portugal, southern France, Morocco, and Algeria[1].
Labdanum is the resinous, sticky substance that covers the leaves and stems of the cistus: a protective secretion that limits water loss and deters most herbivores, yet proves irresistible (as we will see) to goats and sheep[1][2]. The name derives from the Greek ládanon, while "cistus" comes from kístos[2].
A resin documented for three thousand years
The use of labdanum in perfumery and aromatic medicine dates back at least to ancient Egypt, where it was a key ingredient in kyphi, the sacred incense blend used in religious rituals and mummification[2]. Egyptologist Percy Newberry, in the early twentieth century, hypothesized that the ceremonial beards worn by pharaohs were actually impregnated with labdanum, a symbolic reference to the pastoral practice of collecting resin from the beards of goats[2][3].
This anecdote is not isolated folklore: for centuries, throughout the Mediterranean basin, shepherds in Crete and beyond combed the beards and flanks of goats and sheep that had grazed among the cistus bushes, collecting the sticky resin deposited on their fur[3][4]. The Greeks developed a dedicated tool for this, the ladanisterion (or lambadistrion): a wooden rake with leather strips passed through the shrubs to collect labdanum by direct contact[3][4].
The Andalusian method and the memory of the "gitanos"
In Spain, and particularly in the Andalusian region of Andévalo (Huelva), the collection of labdanum has an equally fascinating recent history. Until a few decades ago, families from gypsy communities dedicated their summers to processing the jara pringosa: the resin was boiled with soda and other alkaline substances to separate it from the plant material, a process as essential as it was effective, handed down as a family trade[5].
Scientific literature today distinguishes two traditional aqueous extraction processes for labdanum[6]:
• Zamorano process: physical extraction. The plant material is immersed in boiling water, and the resin, which rises to the surface, is collected with a skimmer.
• Andalusian process: chemical extraction. The material is treated with hot alkaline water; the dissolved resin is then precipitated by lowering the pH with an acid, then separated by decantation or skimming.
An experimental comparison between the two methods showed that the Andalusian process yields approximately 25 times more crude resin than the Zamorano process[6], which explains why the Andalusian tradition (including that passed down by the families of Andévalo) has become the commercial reference for labdanum extraction destined for perfumery and industry.
Three materials, three different olfactive profiles
A common misconception concerns the idea that "labdanum" refers to a single raw material. In reality, different extracts are obtained from cistus, with distinct yields, chemistry, and olfactive profiles.
Labdanum gum
This is the crude exudate collected by contact or through the Zamorano/Andalusian aqueous processes described above. It contains labdanic diterpenes and phenolic compounds, with a warm, amber, slightly animalic, and leathery profile[6].
Cistus essential oil
It is obtained by steam distillation, mainly from leaves and stems in Spain. The result is a yellow-orange oil with a fresher, more terpenic profile than the resin: the composition is dominated by alpha-pinene (45-50%) and camphene, with terpenic alcohols like borneol[7]. It is a different material from resinous labdanum, closer to the green and balsamic aromaticity of the scrubland than to the amber and leathery register.
Labdanum absolute
It is obtained by solvent extraction of the crude resin, followed by ethanol washes to eliminate waxes and concentrate the odoriferous fraction[4]. This is the most used form in fine perfumery as a fixative in chypre, oriental, and fougère accords, due to its tenacity and its complex amber, leathery, and slightly smoky character.
Labdanum resinoid
Also obtained by solvent extraction but without the subsequent refining into an absolute, the resinoid retains a more consistent waxy fraction: it is denser, less volatile, often used as a fixative base in lower concentrations.
The chemistry behind the aroma
The latest phytochemical investigations confirm that cistus is a rich source of secondary metabolites: labdanic diterpenes, methylated flavonoids, and phenolic compounds are responsible for both the aromatic profile and the bioactive properties of the plant[8][9]. Specific research on the resin of Cistus ladanifer has isolated compounds with anti-diabetic (alpha-amylase and alpha-glucosidase inhibition), neuroprotective (acetylcholinesterase inhibition), and anti-proliferative activity from the Andalusian fraction[6], opening prospects beyond perfumery towards pharmacology and functional cosmetics.
It should be stated clearly: these are preliminary studies, largely conducted on isolated extracts or in vitro. They remain a promising research direction, to be followed carefully pending more solid clinical confirmations.
Cistus in the Mediterranean, varieties and Sardinia
The genus Cistus is not limited to ladanifer. Several species coexist in the Mediterranean basin, each with its own chemistry strongly influenced by local climate and soil. In Sardinia, Cistus monspeliensis, Cistus salvifolius, Cistus albidus, and the Sardinian subspecies of Cistus creticus (subsp. creticus, subsp. corsicus, subsp. eriocephalus) grow in particular[10][11].
An interesting fact concerns intraspecific chemical variability: the essential oil of Cistus salvifolius is dominated by germacrene D in Sicily, camphor in Spain and Greece, while in Sardinia, beta-damascenone prevails[12], confirming how soil, climate, and fruiting stage shape the chemical "character" of the same species in different territories. This is the same principle, applied to cistus, that guides the choice of each raw material as an artifact linked to a specific place in our Scent Ethnography practice.
Traditional use and folk medicine
Beyond perfumery, cistus carries a solid ethnobotanical tradition throughout the Mediterranean. In the Iberian Peninsula, some studies tell us, the decoction of the plant was used as a healing agent even on infected wounds, and the oldest cough syrup was, in fact, diluted labdanum[13] (although there might be confusion here between labdanum and laudanum, an opium-based tincture from historical pharmacopoeias). In rural areas, the decoction was used to immobilize fractures and treat lameness in livestock[13].
More recent ethnobotanical studies, conducted in Morocco among the communities of the Rif, also document the use of Cistus ladanifer's seeds for food, consumed raw or ground into flour for bread and sweets, along with widespread use against respiratory, gastrointestinal, and skin disorders[9][14]. In Sardinia, ethnopharmacobotanical research on endemic Mediterranean plants confirms a similar pattern of popular use, with decoction and foliar application as prevalent methods[15].
From the field to the bottle
In Bananambar, natural cistus labdanum works in synergy with amber resinoid to build a contemporary and "super-natural" vision of the amber accord, where the earthy and slightly leathery component of the resin balances the playful opening of banana. In every drop, the raw material carries the memory of the hands that harvested it: from the shepherds of Crete to the families of Andévalo, all the way to the laboratory.
